When I talk about the consulting service I offer I am often asked a lot of questions about what it involves.
A common question is what is the difference between my consulting and my mastermind groups. The difference is that a consultations are one to one, there’s no travelling time, it is undertaken by phone.
The first hour is generally spent determining the best way to focus on your business objective. Here I ask about how your business works, your biggest challenge and this often leads to contextual questions and answers. I find most clients also want to fill me in on why they do what they do. This then leads to the creation of a mission statement that we then agree on as a way forward.
Our time together is, technology permitting (100% so far) recorded. I also keep notes during our call and I prepare a plan or a structure prior to each call. After each call I send a link to the recording and an updated version of the plan so that you have access to both prior to each call.
In between calls I respond to emails and undertake work on your behalf. This may include looking at competitor scenarios and reviewing potential solutions and opportunities. I do this because I enjoy it, it’s an extra benefit of working with me.
Our ongoing calls can be a straight hour once a month or two half hour calls weeks apart.
The objective is partly one of accountability, this is surprising valuable, partly to make sure we stay on track and partly to share information and partly to discuss strategy and tactics.
Half hour calls tend to overrun. Hourly calls tend to extinguish naturally as frankly there is a danger that we cover too much in one shot.
Essentially our calls will touch on ideas, quick fixes, tech fixes, strategy and mainly the appropriate tactics to undertake next and finally to focus on the next steps. That is a lot to cram into half an hour. I find that we will develop a rhythm to our calls so that we cover what needs to be covered in each session with a focus on next steps.
The overall objective is to map out a plan, to then make sure that positive action takes place and that the plan is actioned on and followed through. In the process we will navigate obstacles and decide on the best day to day tactics to use in order to ensure that our strategy is adhered to. This is how progress is made.
Talking things out with a knowledgeable partner is extremely effective in getting to where you want to be. The cross fertilisation of practice, experience and ideas can bring about magical results.
